A ‘Royal’ Flush for Ace of Clubs

Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Mark Bennett launches our new community hygiene facilities

We at Ace of Clubs would like to say a huge heartfelt Thank You to Councillior Mark Bennett, Mayor of Lambeth for coming to visit our work on Friday and open our new hygiene facilities here at our centre for local homeless and vulnerable people. The facilities include seven toilets and three showers, a fantastic laundry area with clothing and bedding storage space and for the first time we have disabled access facilities for those of our members who use wheelchairs. These facilities will be used between thirty and forty thousand times per year over the coming years by our members. Our facilities had fallen into awful disrepair over the last twenty years of heavy use to the point where we could no longer provide these services.
This refurbishment has been a fantastic lift to this community and the thousands of vulnerable people who seek to change their lives through our support here at Ace of Clubs. The fact is that many of our members don’t have what the majority of us in this society take for granted such as access to toilets, clean clothing and bedding, the ability to wash and do their laundry regularly. These are very basic needs we provide for but they are so vital to a person’s wellbeing and are in great demand in these times in our city when increasing numbers of people find themselves losing their dignity as their lives seem to crumble around them through financial difficulties and the breakdown of their support networks. Having such basic human rights to wash, have clean clothing and a toilet to access are actually proving to be quite transformative in people’s lives. It affords them the opportunity to present well at crucial appointments such as job and accommodation interviews and keeps intact their self-respect at what is for many a very low point in their journey through life. Here’s a little report on the launch.
